Enabling older and disabled people to stay in their own homes

York University Examines Costs and Benefits of Housing Support Services

The Centre for Housing Policy at The University of York has published a report for the Scottish Government that reviews the evidence for services like Care and Repair.

The report, written by Nicholas Pleace, recognises 'there is evidence that many older people living in Scotland wish to remain independent and living in their own homes as long as possible'. He notes that the The Sutherland Report 2008 stated, 'Alongside tangible benefits in promoting well-being, linked to choice and control and other aspects of maximising independent living for older people, a lessening reliance on institutional forms of service provision has also reduced costs'.

The report aims to contrast preventative support services, including handyperson, telecare services, with the costs of specialist housing options, such as sheltered housing and extra care housing, as well as the cost of health services.
